Foel (pronounced "voil", from the Welsh word for a barren mountain) is the music project of electronic producer Jack Smith-Keegin, based in North Wales. A Welsh speaker, he works from a long relationship with the local landscape - mountains, coastlines, all weathers - shared nowadays with his wife and two children.
Foel began making music at sixteen, then spent two decades in self-taught practice and tool-building without releasing any of it. Sunbane, founder of WEPN, the Wales Electronic Producers Network, liked his music and supported him in letting it fledge into the wild: his debut single, Ogof / Melltydd, came out on WEPN in 2025, and his first full-length album, Gwasgaru, followed on Machine Records in September 2026.
He uses machines he has built to explore shaped randomness: pieces loop but never quite repeat, and long gradual arcs take each track somewhere completely new.
